A neuroscience approach to measuring and validating the
effectiveness of ingredients on emotion and cognition
Friday, September 30 - Main Stage
Ashraf Vahed was tasked to build a mood efficacy validation model to assess the effectiveness of a client’s ingredients in eliciting the desired mood need state. On stage, he will tell about a real-time testing protocol based on robust RCT designs, that incorporated both neuroscience methodologies and psychophysiological measures.
The technologies and measures utilized included: Near Infra-red Spectroscopy (NIRS) for cerebral blood flow/activity; Electroencephalography (EEG) for approach motivation and attention; Electromyography (EMG) for muscle tension; Electrodermal Activity for sympathetic arousal; Electrocardiography (ECG) for heart rate variability; as well as Blood Pressure and Cortisol testing.
What the audience can learn:
- How a Randomised Trial (RCT) design can be applied to new product R&D
- Considerations with commercially-run randomized trials
- Recommendations for future research in this area
